The Catholic Hospital at Andara, Namibia is now almost 50 years old having been founded in the 1960's.

The hospital serves a remote rural area of Namibia - the Kavango Region in the north eastern corner of Namibia. This area has a 21% rate of HIV/AIDS and is one of poorest areas in Namibia.

As a result of the the extent of the HIV/AIDS, most of the patients in the hospital are dealing with illnesses such as tuberuclosos or pneumonia which are caused by their severely damaged immune system. Many of these patients are dying from AIDS or illnesses caused by AIDS.

The hospital serves nearly 30,000 rural people. The total patients coming to the hospital each day for help is approximately 50 to 60 with 10 to 20 being admitted to the hospital each day for further care and treatment.

The hospital has 120 beds and the patients are served by 19 nurses (4 of whom are Sisters of the Sacred Heart) and only 3 doctors. This busy hospital finds itself on the very front line of the battle against HIV/AIDS.
