Sacred Heart Nyangana Parish was founded by the German Oblates of Mary Immaculate (OMI) among the Gciriku people after many failed attempts. 21" May 1910 is the day when the founding leader and his successor, Fathers Joseph Gotthardt, Augustin Bierfert respectively and three Brothers arrived at "Kandenga" It was later re-named "Nyangana" out of gratitude to Chief Nyangana who had made it possible to start their first mission station at the Kavango Region. Nyangana served as the springboard for founding the other six mission stations in Kavango.
In 1912 the first small church was completed. The first adults were baptized in 1912. In 1922 things took a dramatic change when the Benedictine nuns from Tutzing in southern Germany arrived at Nyangana. They took over teaching, caring for the sick, and various house keeping duties. It soon became necessary to build outer stations due to the growing Christian community.Fr.Schlag was succeeded by Fr. Batsen then Fr.Wirth and Manfred as leaders of the Parish. In December 2004 Fr. Manfred Foerg OMI left for another Mission after 15 years here. Nyangana Mission covers an area of 15,000 sq kms with the population of almost 40,000. Today the parish comprises of 46 communities in which the Eucharist is celebrated. The communities are divided in six (6) centers. Donations requested for the following: 1. Parish Support: Sacred Heart Parish does not have income of its own. Our parishoners are very poor, depending totally on the cultivation of millet "hirse" mahangu". This is not enough to support their families let alone support the Parish activities. At the Parish centre 60 Namibian dollars is the average collection every Sunday and Church tax is non-existent. Up till December 2004 it has depended on support and generosity of benefactors and friends of the previous pastor for its missionary activities. Since his transfer last year there is dramatic decline in the support from benefactors. The future is dark without this support. It is impossible to manage the activities of the Parish like visiting the many communities. Please help, and your support will be put into good use. 2. Replace asbestos water pipes: We pump water from the Okavango River for irrigation and domestic use in the Mission - Girls Hostel (indirect consumption) using asbestos pipes. Since it is now known that asbestos is a healthy hazard we would like to replace them. Our main backdrop is the finance. are of asbestos. We would like to replace them but we cannot. 3. Hostel renovation: The Hostel has not been renovated since 1976. There is an old system of toilets which require manual emptying after some time. A modern system would not be a luxury. Every two years we make a new grass fence. A brick wall around the girls would be decent. Gratitude We would like to express our sincere gratitude for the generosity extended to us (Sacred Heart Nyangana Parish) to the following: 1. Mr. And Mrs Mike Shaughnessy of Denver, Colorado USA for donating a lap-top computer. 2. Mr. Jeff Ng of New York, USA for coordinating the donation of five computers. 3. Mrs. Roth and Family (in memory of Bob Roth) of Colorado, USA donated money for the shipping of the computers. Bob wished to support Sacred Heart Nyangana Parish. He, sadly passed away in October 2005. His family made the donation on his behalf. May his soul rest in peace. 4. Ms. Natalie Pool, a Peace Corp from the USA facilitated the donations. We are very grateful for the generosity extended to us (Sacred Heart Nyangana Parish). Reverend Fr. Charles Mikaya |
